One tree goes in St James compromise

ONE sycamore was removed from behind St James as tree surgeons completed a scaled-down felling operation, described as a 'satisfactory compromise'.

Originally four sycamores were earmarked for removal amid concerns they were rotting a walkway, cutting out light and obscuring the view, but opposition was raised about the loss of greenery in the urban centre.

Amended plans were then approved to remove just one of the trees and carry out crown lifting and remedial work, including the removal of ivy, from the other three.

Charles Vaudin Tree Surgery completed the work this week.

St Peter Port Floral Group co-ordinator Katina Jones was among those who objected to the original plans, concerned about the loss of greenery.

She has visited the site since the work and said the loss of the tree opened up the area, showing more of the building behind.

She said ivy had not yet been removed from the other trees. Mrs Jones had also been told that shrubs would be planted, but this has not yet happened.
