Chernobyl charity may have to disband if help not found

AN URGENT appeal is being made by the Chernobyl Children Life Line Guernsey Link following fears the charity could disband if more help cannot be found.

The charity, which brings over children from Belarus, is looking for families to host youngsters as well as new committee members and a new chairperson to take the organisation forward.

Rod Brehaut founded the Guernsey Link in 1992 and since then it has hosted 12 to 14 children aged 10 or 11 each year, for a recuperative month.

The children live in the shadow of the Chernobyl power plant, which exploded in 1986, covering the area in fallout. Even decades later the nearby population suffer health problems.

Terry Iles has been leading the Guernsey Link for seven years, after taking over from Mr Brehaut.

However, he said it was time for him to stand down.

  • Anybody who is able to help is asked to contact Mr Iles on 263854 or email terryiles@cwgsy.net.
