Repair of 'dangerous' sea wall not a priority

LARGE cracks and voids in the sea wall at the eastern end of L'Ancresse are putting beach-goers at serious risk, it was claimed yesterday.

But Environment minister Yvonne Burford said repair work on the sea defence was at the bottom of its priority list and unlikely to happen until 2018.

Deputy Tony Spruce, along with fellow Vale deputies, has received numerous complaints from parishioners about the 'appalling' state of the wall and asked Environment whether repairs would be completed by next summer.

He also raised similar concerns about Fermain, which he said also represented a 'very real health and safety risk for all beach-goers'.

'We get continuous complaints about the L'Ancresse East sea wall and the voids down there are big enough to fit a cow, let alone children, and children are crawling all over it.'

Environment last year asked for £2m. to carry out urgent repairs to coastal defences – so far it has spent just over a third of it.
