Milk retailers are to get £40k each compensation

GUERNSEY has a moral obligation to compensate milk retailers for changes to the distribution system, deputies said yesterday, as they passed an amendment that will see a total financial mitigation of up to £750,000 offered.

Deputy Andrew Le Lievre led the successful amendment, passed 28-16 with one abstention, which will see the 23 retailers receive up to £40,000 each.

It follows the recent States decision to allow shops and supermarkets to deal directly with the dairy.

Deputy Le Lievre said the move was purely on the grounds of morality.
