Former Guernsey FC chairman cleared of sexual assault
FORMER Guernsey FC chairman Steve Dewsnip has been cleared of sexually assaulting a waitress in a suite at Wembley.
Mr Dewsnip, of an address in Castel, had pleaded not guilty in Harrow Crown Court to one count of sexual assault on 8 September last year after the England v Switzerland Euro qualifier.
It had been alleged that Mr Dewsnip, 49, who resigned as chairman of GFC in August, pulled the woman towards him and groped her bottom as she collected glasses.
The jury unanimously cleared him after considering their verdict for just 30 minutes.
As the verdict was announced Mr Dewsnip closed his eyes and turned his head upwards.
Mr Dewsnip said: 'I am delighted that the jury saw the truth of the matter and returned a not guilty verdict.'
'But I am appalled that the case was brought in the first place with no real evidence against me.
'I have the utmost respect for women and would never dream of behaving in the way portrayed in court.
'My thoughts are obviously with the woman in this case.
"But I would never act in this way. This has also been a terrible ordeal for me, my partner, family and friends. I am thankful that my good name has now been restored and that I can now get on with my life.'
