Electricity from landfill gas 'too costly'

EQUIPMENT to produce power from Mont Cuet's landfill gas would cost nearly £1m., but it may no longer be value for money as the tip is to close next year, Waste Services manager Joe Adams has said.

The idea of using the methane to generate electricity was announced by the former Public Services Department in 2013, with plans to power 850 homes.

Despite a positive reception at the time, the project has not got off the drawing board.

As Waste Services applies to replace the existing flare with another, which will just burn the gas, Mr Adams confirmed they were not looking to invest in generating power.

'Additional equipment would be required to be able to generate electricity, which will cost nearly £1m.,' he said.

'That is not actually required for the management of the site, so it is subject to a separate business case.

'Mont Cuet will cease being used as a general landfill site from next year. After about two or three years from then, the volume of gas being produced will start to reduce.

'The issue in terms of generating electricity largely relates to whether you can produce enough to pay back the investment in that time.'
