Billy Monger, 17, was airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he is said to be in a critical but stable condition, and in an induced coma, following lower leg amputations.

A fundraising campaign that was intended to raise £260,000 exceeded its target within an hour, and passed the £500,000 mark yesterday. It has support from major celebrities in the motor racing world including former Guernsey resident Jenson Button who donated £15,000 and tweeted: 'Embrace the love from your family and friends during this tough time in your life, get well soon buddy...JB.'

Following the crash, Priaulx, 16, who was racing at the same meeting, tweeted that he wished his team-mate all the best for his recovery. A later message said: 'Please help Billy Monger, keep fighting and never give up.'
