'Stride and Ride' in one of the new buses this May

STRIDE and ride is the theme locally for this year's National Walking Month, which starts on Monday.

Pedestrian safety group Living Streets (Guernsey) LBG and the Bus Users Guernsey (BUG) have joined forces again to promote the initiative.

Chair of Living Streets, Tom Le Pelley, said it wanted car commuters to consider alternative ways of travelling to work during May.

'If you live within a mile of your workplace, walking to work is an obvious option – it should take less than 20 minutes. If you live further away, you could still build walking into your daily routine by combining a good stretch on foot with a bus ride.

'Stride to the second bus stop – step off two before your journey ends.

'Mix and Match many modes of movement to keep your heart ticking. We are calling this the "Stride and Ride Challenge"'.

Living Streets UK (who organise National Walking Month) is challenging everyone to feel fitter, brighter and more connected by pledging to walk 20 minutes each day.

Coordinator of Bug, Fergus Dunlop, said: 'Living Streets in the UK has again picked May as the month to walk – rather than taking the car. It's a great month to blow some fresh air through your nostrils and sniff the springtime.'
