A £25.2m. contract for the main infrastructure for the island's future waste management was signed yesterday by States' Trading Supervisory Board president Deputy Charles Parkinson and representatives of international engineering firm Amec Foster Wheeler.

The main construction work will be carried out by AmecFW's sub-contractor, Guernsey firm Geomarine.

'Progress should now be swift,' said Deputy Parkinson, adding that the commission phase of the new transfer station should start in the second half of next year.

'That is important, as the remaining life of Mont Cuet is very limited,' he said.
