Lin Maurice, pictured, was the only candidate seeking to complete the term of Rhys Jenkins, who stepped down for family reasons.

A by-election was scheduled for 15 October but with the period to submit nominations closing at 4pm yesterday, returning officer Kathryn Jones declared Ms Maurice duly elected.

‘I felt my country needed me,’ said Ms Maurice, who has two years of the term to complete. She previously served four-and-a-half years to December 2009.

‘I had such fantastic support and encouragement from people and I’m so grateful to them all. It’s a shame that they never got the chance to vote for me but then it saved the cost of holding a by-election.’

She said she hoped to serve on the General Services Committee for which there was currently a vacant seat. She expects to be sworn in this week.
