The old surface was laid in the early 1990s and had come to the end of its usable life.

‘We are very proud of the new ATP at Memorial Field,' said head of hockey Andy Good.

‘Along with games lessons and matches for Elizabeth College, it will also host teams in the Guernsey men’s and ladies’ hockey leagues, ensuring the new pitch benefits the whole island community.’

The project is now approaching completion, with floodlighting having been installed at the end of June, taking the facility closer towards its official opening on Saturday 9 September.

College bursar James Couchman managed the project and said he was particularly delighted that many of the old materials had been able to be recycled, including rubber shock padding, carpet, goals and concrete blocks.

Dairy farmers, a local gardener and Blanchelande College have been able to use these items for their own projects, but as there were plenty of resources left, the bursar said he would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to give them a good home.

The project was delivered by Simon Hall, at Adsum Sport and Play, who was also the main contractor for the Aztech Soccer Sports Complex.

The project comprised comprehensive renovations to the Memorial Field facility including removal of the old surface, upgrading of the electrics and drainage, a new sub-base, including a shock-absorption

layer, and the laying of the smart, new blue pitch.

At its official opening in September the pitch will host various games for students in the Junior and Upper Schools, with the Elizabeth College First XI fixture against an Old Elizabethans side being the first competitive match to be played, in recognition of the OE Association’s support in helping to fund the renovations.
