Visitors in town spoken to by the Guernsey Press were excited to explore what Guernsey had to offer in terms of retail.

German journalism student Lia Kentischer, 25, and her family were having a look at shops along the High Street.

‘During lockdown I read a book that mentioned Guernsey and then I just fell down a rabbit hole,’ she said.

‘I learnt about Victor Hugo and Renoir and about the island in general and finally persuaded my family to visit.’

The Kentischer family live in the south of Germany and are in the island for two weeks, which included spending their Christmas here.

‘Guernsey’s town is very picturesque, we came in today to have a look around and also I wanted to buy some new shoes because it’s quite wet over here,’ said Miss Kentischer.

Jonathan and Johanna Hector, who live near Bath, have been in the island visiting family for Christmas. They decided to have a look round town before travelling back to the UK.

Mrs Hector grew up in Guernsey and her family still live here.

‘Everything changes each time I come, it’s not like it used to be at all,’ she said.

Mr Hector added: ‘We didn’t come into town specifically for the sales, we thought we’d have a wander around.’

One local woman said that she usually hated going into Town, and would only ever pop in when there is a sale on.

‘It’s just nothing like the old days, it’s dull and most of all it’s so expensive,’ she said.
