AS HE prepares to call time on his Island Games career, flagbearer Rob Smart believes Guernsey's mountain bikers could provide the fairytale ending in Bermuda.

The 35-year-old is preparing for his eighth Games – the sixth as a cyclist after two as a footballer – having been a near ever-present in Team Guernsey since 1997.

His only absence was Aland 2009 when cycling wasn't included.

But for all he did in the first decade, nothing came close to the staggering achievements two summers ago in the Isle of Wight, when the mountain bikers produced the performance of the Games.

Led by Smart's first of two individual gold medals, the men's quintet secured a staggering 1-2-3 in the criterium, which went a long way to the three golds, one silver and one bronze won across just three events.
