'Gut-wrenching' strike sinks GFC

But after the mess of recent midweek excursions in the Ryman Isthmian South, it required an 86th-minute winner from fifth-place Whyteleafe to sink a much improved and gutted Green Lions 1-0.

Substitute Shawn Lyle's quality strike gave Chris Tardif no chance and for all GFC's resilience and character to warm the hearts of all their supporters, Tony Vance's men again experienced the cruel side of sport.

Vance overcame his disappointment to insist that the corner will soon be turned if these efforts are emulated in the coming weeks.

'It was gut-wrenching to lose like that,' said Vance later.

'But it was a "worldy'' of a strike and nobody could have saved it,' he added.
