Guernsey FC 0, Faversham Town 2

A MIDWEEK defeat had left their play-off hopes hanging by a thread and, less than 96 hours later, Guernsey FC's ambitions of Ryman South promotion came close to ending with this disappointing Footes Lane reverse.

In fairness to the Green Lions, there is no shame in losing to the side now cementing second place and currently the league's top scorers, but it was the way the game unfolded that will have frustrated the hosts.

They can – and no doubt will – point to the fact that, for the most part, even in a dour first half, they were in the game and having their fair share of possession.

But the brutal truth is that until a strong final quarter – which came about after the introduction of the excellent Kieran Mahon – GFC never looked capable of scoring against a well-organised, solid defensive outfit, who won thanks to second-half goals from Dean Grant and Wayne Wilson.

The day got even worse for GFC as the three sides leading the race for the final play-off spot all won.

Just five points separated the six sides realistically challenging for fifth spot before a ball had been kicked on Saturday, but the Green Lions' hopes are now slim at best.

Wins for Whyteleafe, Worthing and Herne Bay mean that Tony Vance's men are now eight points back in ninth with just nine games to play.
