Caesareans fight back to reach Jeremie Cup final

MUCH of Saturday evening suggested a glorious day for Guernsey football but, ultimately, Vale Rec and St Martin's both fell just short in their Jeremie Cup quests.

A couple of hours after Guernsey FC were ending their home Ryman South season with a 1-1 draw against Worthing, the two Sarnian clubs were in inter-island action.

And with both leading 1-0 for a spell – St Martin's against Wheway Cup winners St Ouen and Rec against Trinity – a first all-Guernsey final in years seemed possible.

But the Caesareans came back fighting in both cases and at the Corbet Field, it was Karl Hinds' double that meant Damien Larkin's penalty opener for Rec went to waste in a 2-1 Trinity success.

It would get even closer at Blanche Pierre Lane after Jordan Taylor had his strike cancelled out and the sides had to settle it from the penalty spot, where Jersey's 'Saints' held their nerve.

By the time the Jeremie and Wheway are contested for against next season, it will be five years since a Guernsey side won either, although the gap in recent months appears to have been closing.

As for GFC, they were grateful to Dave Rihoy, who earned his side a point with a fine header to cancel out a deficit at Footes Lane and the Green Lions remain 12th in the table with two away games remaining.

The FNB Priaulx League title race also took another step in what is fast becoming a thrilling conclusion, as Rovers moved back to within three points of leaders North.

A penalty in each half from Luke Winch was enough to see off a plucky Sylvans side 2-0 at St Peter's and, with three games remaining, Rovers are still right in the hunt.

However, they face an acid test of their title credentials tomorrow night when they travel to Vale Rec, while they still have to play Rangers and leaders North.

If they were to win all three of those matches, they would likely force a play-off with North, who also have Bels and St Martin's to face.
