Guernsey all-rounder Stokes is Leicestershire bound

MATT STOKES enjoyed a well-earned day off from World Cricket League action along with his island colleagues yesterday. From next week, though, the young all-rounder will be heading to the Midlands for a summer's cricket with County Championship club Leicestershire.

Stokes has been persuaded north by someone known all too well by him and the rest of the Guernsey team – Nic Pothas.

The former South African international has long had high hopes for the Old Elizabethan, currently studying at Solent University, and last summer as he saw out the final weeks of his contract as Guernsey's director of cricket from the south coast and another role with Hampshire, Pothas persuaded Stokes to try his luck there.

Now, having moved to the ambitious Division Two championship club as head of their academy, Pothas has identified an opening for his Sarnian protege in the club's seconds for the rest of 2016.

Not only that, he has invited two more of Guernsey's brightest prospects – batsman Tom Nightingale and fast bowler Will Fazakerley – to play for the Foxes' academy side.

Nightingale and Fazakerley are not in Jersey this week, as the tournament clashes with important school exams.

Meanwhile, Guernsey return to action today against the Nigerians.
