The Sarnians finished second in their group in Ayr behind England, having registered wins over Spain 17-15, Cyprus 29-13, Switzerland 27-8, Czech Republic 15-13 and the Isle of Man 19-15. Their group losses came against the table-toppers and Wales.

Solway and Priaulx then held their nerve to edge out Ireland 13-12 in their semi-final before falling just short in their final against England, going down 19-17.

‘I am delighted for Matt and Todd to win the silver medal,’ said Bowls Guernsey president Garry Collins.

‘It’s been a hard three days for them, with nine matches in total, in some very hot conditions here in Ayr.

‘They are travelling to the Commonwealth Games late next week and this will give them a real boost.’

In the other disciplines played so far, Guernsey’s team of Martyn De Carteret, John Pinson and Mick Ogier finished fourth in their men’s triples group after wins over Czech Republic, Switzerland, the Isle of Man and the Netherlands. They lost to England, Scotland and Spain.

In the women’s pairs, Rose Ogier and Lyn Small beat the Isle of Man but lost to England, France, Scotland, the Netherlands and Israel.

The singles and fours round-robins got under way yesterday, with the finals on Thursday afternoon.

In total 17 countries are competing at the championships.
