Guernsey's greatest revealed

OLYMPIANS, GB internationals and former world and national champions are among the inaugural 10 Guernsey sporting heroes inducted into the Guernsey Sports Commission's wall of fame. While three have sadly died and several were stuck in the UK, two were present at Beau Sejour last night to see, first hand, their official entry into the list of Guernsey sporting greats.
In a slick production and in alphabetical order, Sports Commission chairman Stuart Falla revealed the 10 greats who were profiled by illustrations.
The 10 included his late brother, Keith, one of Guernsey's finest athletes, killed in a road accident in New Zealand in 1975.
Former Guernsey Sports Council chairman Owen Le Vallee had no complaints with the initial inductees.
'I think they all deserve a place up there - they really are the past heroes of a past generation.
'Hopefully, we will see another 10 inducted over the next 10 years.'
Charlie Renouf, president of the Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association, praised the slick production and the choice, but thought room might have been made for two of local football's greats.
'The one I thought they might have have had was Les Collins. He was one of the greatest... and Colin Renouf as well.'
The commission chairman revealed that three current names of Guernsey sport have in their possession invitations to join the wall of fame - when they have retired.
CRITERIA
PERFORMANCE: The inductee must have achieved something very special in a local, national or international event.
INSPIRATION: The individual should have inspired others.
COMMITMENT: Ideally, to have put something back into local sport.
