Guernsey has about 1,450 local moorings, across three marinas, but now has more than 150 boats on a waiting list. Guernsey Harbours said that the first come, first served list was re-introduced in January 2020.

Assistant harbour master Kieran Higgs said that the increased demand was likely due to a combination of factors, including travel restrictions outside the Bailiwick, the fact that boats are getting bigger, some individuals may have more disposable income, and more islanders keen to appreciate the Bailiwick waters.

The waiting list requires boat owners to complete an application form. Customers already on the list must complete the form also and pay the £60 administration fee or risk losing their position on the list. Mr Higgs added that misunderstandings on transferring ownership of moorings created additional problems.

‘Many people still believe they can sell a boat with the mooring attached, historically this was more commonplace as it made the process quicker and easier and it was unlikely anyone else would require that mooring,’ he said.

‘However, all moorings are owned by Guernsey Harbours and simply leased to our customers.’

A short grace period to hold the berth can be requested until islanders take ownership of new boats, but without a response Guernsey Harbours said they will forfeit their position on the waiting list and be removed.
