The school celebrates its 50th birthday this year and staff had brought a special ‘50th’ flavour to celebrations

Pupils were studying books that their parents and even grandparents might know well, with Mr Tickle in reception, the Giant Jam Sandwich in year one, and Fungus the Bogeyman entertaining children in year four.

‘We have got the children working with books that were all popular when the school was just starting out,’ said deputy head Juliet Ford.

‘The children are working on book reviews and dreaming up new Mr Men Characters, with some book-inspired prizes on offer too.’

Almost all the schools’ 292 pupils had come in fancy dress and practically all the staff had joined in too.

Corridors were packed with Harry Potters, Gangsta Grannies and Cats in Hats, as well as Willy Wonkas and Matildas.

Jess Gillespie, 9, had come as the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz.

‘It was hard to decide who to come as, I love the story and my favourite character is actually Dorothy,’ she said.

‘I love World Book Day, I love reading, I love the language of books and finding out what the author has decided to write about.’

To continue the 50th theme, staff, parents and carers had organised a 50p cake and second-hand book sale for the whole school at lunchtime.

Mrs Ford said they were hoping to raise enough funds through a number of anniversary events to help enliven the school environment.

‘We are hoping to purchase some wall art, with areas such as book section and a science section and to display the convention on child’s rights, to really make the most of our learning space,’ she said.

The school is holding an open day on Friday 10 May to celebrate its anniversary.

It is hoping that many islanders, especially past pupils and former staff, will be able to take part. More details on the anniversary plans will be announced soon.
