Elizabeth Hutchinson has been awarded a BEM in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Mrs Hutchinson, who was born in the UK and has been a Guernsey resident for 30 years, is an independent trainer and adviser specialising in all aspects of school libraries.

Her career has ranged from being a school librarian to the head of the Schools’ Library Service.

She is also an international speaker, vice-chairman of the #GreatSchoolLibraries campaign, a committee member for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals School Library Group, renowned blogger and a regular columnist in the group’s publication, Information Professional.

‘When I first found out about the award I was initially very shocked that someone thought what I was doing was enough to nominate me,’ she said.

‘I hope it gives me the platform to continue what I am doing to raise awareness about the importance of school libraries.

‘The BEM gives me the opportunity to share my passion and knowledge further, it is truly an honour to receive it.’

She thanked the Guille-Alles Library, where she used to work, for supporting her in her mission to give librarians a voice and become an independent adviser.

Other islanders recognised in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list were Bryan Brehaut, BEM for his services to young people in Guernsey through The Boys’ Brigade; Alderney’s former President Stuart Trought, MBE for his services to the island; David Swiffen, MBE for services to wellbeing and to inter-faith dialogue in Guernsey; and Major Christopher David Ayres, MBE.
