Mr Swiffen bought Les Cotils in 1994 and transformed it from a Catholic sisters’ convent into a place that the whole of Guernsey could use.

He promised to maintain the Christian ethos and said the many prayers which have been said there give it the special feeling it has today.

‘I have to thank the person who nominated me for the Member of the Order of the British Empire, I feel this is an award for all of those who have put time and effort into making Les Cotils a community centre and I am incredible humbled.

‘As a retired sheep farmer, I have always known the community spirit in rural life and the need to help out your neighbours when needed.’

Mr Swiffen said the unique opportunity to take over Les Cotils 25 years ago was a challenge but there was already a great community spirit in the island which continues to grow.

‘I am so pleased for all the people involved that the centre is now being recognised for its place in Guernsey’s society.

‘We have had the support from the Dean to create an ecumenical centre and the parishes to have a place to come together and a place to hold retreats and other functions for locals and visitors.’

Les Cotils has played host to European and Catholic bishops’ conferences, as well as a variety of local meetings, international business conferences and charity events.
