Denise Poat, 59, has Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, which reduces her mobility, and after struggling on her usual morning walk from her house in Grandes Maisons Road to Waitrose, passing bus driver Jeff Senior stopped and ensured she got as close to her destination as possible.

'I would usually route-march along the front, but it had taken me 15 minutes to get to Richmond Corner and I couldn't turn around in the wind.

'I have a walking stick and the wind was taking it out from underneath me. The driver saw me, stopped and picked me up, and I said to him, "I'll never make it to Waitrose", because it is like a wind-tunnel around there.

'He radioed ahead and dropped me at the path next to the supermarket before turning round to continue.'

Mr Senior, 57, said he was just doing his job. 'She was near the bus stop and the weather was just horrendous,' he said.
