Ground so wet more floods are inevitable
SATURATED ground will cause more localised flooding during downpours, the director of water services has warned.
Only one day this year has been rain-free, and with more forecast, Andrew Redhead said it would not take much to flood roads.
'We had nearly double the amount of rainfall in January than usual and we need a window of several days, maybe a week, of dry weather to get groundwater levels back to normal.
'The streams are chock-a-block. The water table is nearly level with the ground. There will be localised flooding.'
New wastewater treatment facilities at Belle Greve had 'worked well' during the worst of the storms, he added, although there was 'an hour or so' when the short sea outfall had to be used to avoid flooding in Victoria Avenue.
