Gaining Pathfinder wings was not without pain

BREAKING his leg on his final jump was just a 'minor inconvenience' for Jon Bridel as he landed with a bump to complete a military parachute course for charity.

The 49-year-old non-executive director from St Peter Port said it had been an unforgettable experience to gain his Pathfinder parachute wings during a training course in the Netherlands in aid of the Parachute Regiment Charity.

Having landed in the drop zone unscathed for his first two jumps, it was his third that presented him with problems when the wind subsided.

He landed very hard and broke his leg.

'It is not so bad,' he added. 'A minor inconvenience for what was without any doubt one of the best weeks of my life. The close friends I have made are very special and it was a privilege to have trained and jumped with incredible characters.'

Mr Bridel was one of nine on the course to complete the third jump that entitled them to the Pathfinder parachute wings accreditation.

His reason for signing up for the course was to gain some insight into what paratrooper veterans had been through and to raise money for the Parachute Regiment Charity. He has so far landed £2,750 for completing the challenge, which ties in with the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the later battle for Arnhem.
