Sark is 'broken'

SARK'S constable may not be able to calm and control increasing anger as its residents become ever more divided over the state of the 'broken' island's faltering economy, a steering group has warned.

Sark Action for Families and Employees (Safe) has written an open letter to conseillers begging them to bring forward proposals to improve the island's economy.

It said the group, which was set up a year-and-a-half ago, felt it had 'reached the end of the road', claiming the realisation came following the contents of the Midsummer Chief Pleas agenda and a visit by Minister for Justice, with responsibility for the Channel Islands, Lord Faulks, which it said had been 'thoroughly stage-managed' to ensure he did not see the reality of Sark's struggling economy.

'Sadly, we are coming to the conclusion that the further destruction of Sark's struggling economy and the depopulation that will surely follow is, at least with some conseillers, an act of malice aimed at closing the island down completely,' the group said.

'Sark has, at best, three-and-a-half months of tourist season left before work opportunities rapidly cease.

'There are some residents here who are still paying off debts and loans from last winter, and there is no sign of the coming months bringing any better employment opportunities than were available through the last two winters.

'We are already hearing of families who plan to leave over the next few months, and feel it is likely there will be more leaving us than there were last winter.'
