INDEPENDENT living, freedom and quality of life are fundamental at the new La Nouvelle Maraitaine extra care housing complex, where the first phase of development is now complete.

Started in 2007, the new building has replaced former care home, Maison Maritaine.

As part of the first phase, which cost £15.5m., 54 flats have been built for people aged 18 and over who need support but can manage in their own accommodation.

Older people's housing, care and support director Lois King said the complex demonstrated the influence that independence could have on wellbeing.

'Each care home resident has different needs, so each resident has different care and a support plan measured in weekly hours.'

There are kitchen windows in the flats leading onto corridors for a far more social experience.

There is buggy storage outside each apartment and every one has a balcony or terrace.
