Initial predictions of storm force 10 winds did not fully materialise according to senior forecaster at the Guernsey Met Office, Martin Crozier.
'The storm was not as bad as we predicted, but it was gusting to a severe gale force nine overnight and winds were as high as 54mph,' he said.
Mr Crozier said the worst of the storm hit the island between 1am and 1.50am, but that the UK bore the brunt of the damage.
Islanders had been prepared for the predicted rough weather after the Jersey Met Office issued a severe red wind warning.
Surfers and beachgoers enjoyed the calm before the storm yesterday.
