As part of its plans to sell the site, States Property Services, a division of Treasury and Resources, has applied to change the use of the iconic 1850s building.

If approved, any new owner would be allowed to convert the fort into a private residential unit of accommodation.

The fort was originally constructed in the 1850's as part of a series of fortifications on the west coast and the site comprises of land, buildings and other archaeological features, the most prominent element being the fortified barrack block.

The planning application seeks permission to convert the former barrack block into a single unit of residential accommodation.

Treasury and Resources said it intended to ask the Assembly later in the year to put the property on the Open Market.
