David Matthews said Les Nicolles would be able to cope with 96-year-old Gaston John Pinsard, the oldest prisoner in the British Isles, who was given an 18-month sentence for the indecent assault of two girls in the 1950s and 1960s.

'The oldest person we've had was 86 years old, he was discharged last year.

'We've currently got three prisoners over 65 years of age and another six between 55 and 65.

'So we're used to dealing with elderly prisoners, but not someone of his age,' he said.
