HMS Gleaner builds up 3D image of the Russel seabed

NEW Admiralty charts for the Russel should be published later this year, but so far a survey of the channel has not turned up any dramatic changes.

HMS Gleaner arrived last Tuesday and the nine-person crew are working six days a week to ensure the survey is completed by the end of the month.

Lieutenant Commander Adam Coles said the project had been going smoothly.

'We have been working up at the north end of the Little Russel and we have gone as far as Brehon so far,' he said, adding that the Royal Navy needed to have very accurate maps, since vessels regularly trained in local waters due to their challenging nature.

'It's most definitely an important area to the navy, as it has a high tidal stream – up to five knots – and obstacles like rocks,' he said.
