MILK retailers are being let down by proposals to allow shops and supermarkets to deal directly with Guernsey Dairy, a disappointed Vale deputy said.

Mother of the House Mary Lowe was speaking after Commerce and Employment outlined its intentions, which would also see milkmen and women get no compensation.

'I am disappointed to see that the proposals being put forward are letting the milk retailers down,' said Deputy Lowe, whose husband is a former milkman.

'Certainly many years ago when we owned a milk round, part of the zoning process was done in conjunction with the Dairy itself, it helped instigate it,' she said. 'The Dairy is reneging on the way that it encouraged milk retailers to operate their milk rounds.'

Age Concern chairman Deputy Lester Queripel felt the proposals could have a negative impact on the elderly.

'I'm extremely concerned that if milk roundsmen and women go out of business, there could quite possibly be many elderly people and also fellow islanders with mobility problems, who are then seemingly "abandoned" to fend for themselves.'
