GUERNSEY said a final farewell to the Lt-Governor yesterday as islanders stood together to honour the memory of a 'true gentleman' and 'friend to so many'.

An emotional and fitting tribute was paid to Air Marshal Peter Walker at a service of thanksgiving and farewell at the Town Church, where his children read a poem and his daughter Suzie thanked the island for so many kind words and messages.

'Your kind words, thoughts and prayers have been a comfort when we needed it most,' she said. 'My father loved his time here and took enormous pride in representing Her Majesty. He saw it as his duty and honour to serve and defend the people of the Bailiwick and to preserve and protect this unique part of the world.'

Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, in his tribute, described the dedication, commitment and personal qualities of the Lt-Governor, which would be so sadly missed.
