The Victoria Street venue has been bought by the Jersey-based Liberation Group for just over around £500,000 after a protracted sales process.

Group chief executive Mark Crowther said it intended to re-open the Chez as a bar, restaurant and hotel and confirmed he had no plans to embark on any property development venture, such as turning the upstairs into flats.

The Liberation Group's portfolio boasts 68 predominantly freehold pubs, the Liberation Brewery and drinks wholesaler Bucktrout.
