But around just a quarter of the registered voters turned out to take part.

The victory announcement was made just before 10pm, less than two hours after the polls closed.

There are 3,220 people registered to vote in the district, which stretches north of the Grange.

But just 27% of those cast a vote yesterday.

The majority of the 883 votes – 571 – were for Mr Parkinson, who was the Treasury and Resources minister from 2008 to 2012.

He said he was pleased with his victory.

'I'm thrilled to be elected by such a large margin,' he said.
