A MAN slashed a teenager across the chest with a knife after the 19-year-old knocked at his St Peter Port home late at night, asking for a cigarette, the Royal Court was told.

Michael Hughes, 41, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Jonathan Wilson, a complete stranger, was sentenced to three years behind bars and ordered to pay £305 in compensation for hospital costs.

Before being jailed, Hughes, who runs his own building company, was warned that his use of a 'potentially fatal weapon' was a significant factor and the injuries could have been even worse.

Judge Russell Finch said the defendant had grossly overreacted when the victim had come to his home in Brock Road in the early hours as he had.

'This could have been a lot worse when a knife is employed and you also have a violent past,' he said.
