He had been unwell for some time and passed away peacefully at Les Bourgs Hospice after being transferred there from the Princess Elizabeth Hospital on Friday.

Mr Green, pictured, who joined the Guernsey Press Co Ltd in 1956, was initially employed as a compositor and Linotype operator. He was then appointed as a staff photographer and, working across the Bailiwick and beyond, became a well-known and well-liked ambassador for 'the Press'.

Former Chief Reporter Herbert Winterflood, who worked with Brian for 40 years, said he had a rich personality laced with friendliness and good humour.

'Brian's contribution to the last 50 years of the Bailiwick's history has been considerable and is demonstrated in the number of photographic prints in his personal collection,' said Mr Winterflood. 'These portrayed all aspects of life in the island he loved,'

Guernsey Press editor Shaun Green said Brian was a legend at the paper. 'He was the epitome of the professional journalist. Dedicated, talented and unfailingly cheerful, no matter how stressful the circumstances. He will be missed.'

Management and staff offered their sympathy to Brian's wife, Margaret, and his two sons and daughter.
