Rupert Dorey, who was one of 22 high-profile individuals to sign a letter calling for an inquiry into the island's future, said he and members of the 22 had been invited to meet with members of Chief Pleas.

Following the publication of the letter, Mr Dorey said he had been approached by many people from different interest groups, which had helped him to understand the issues Sark faced.

'We have been a focus group for people to express opinion openly or privately,' he said.

'It has been extremely useful to understand what goes on and what people think.'

He said the members due to visit today would be entirely open-minded.

'We haven't got a specific agenda.'

He added that it would be premature to say what he thought was going to be discussed.

'We will go with an open mind and will formulate our opinion after that. We are all hopeful for a much better and prosperous future for Sark, but I think there is a long way to go.'
