Dr Lyons, who was the subject of lurid national news headlines during the police investigation, said his patients' belief in him had provided unstinting support during the difficult period.

He also recognised the difficult time suffered by relatives of the patients at the centre of it all.

The island GP was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in relation to the patient deaths and his licence to practise was restored by the General Medical Council.

'I recognise the enormous shock and distress suffered by the bereaved families who were inevitably drawn into a prolonged investigation,' he said.

'I hope that they can now find peace of mind in light of the truth that has been uncovered during the investigatory process.

'Thank you for your continued support throughout this period.'
