The 66-year-old was nominated for the Grandparent/s of the Year Award, sponsored by the Channel Islands Co-operative Society, by her close friend Jayne Le Cras.

Jean lost her daughter, Morgaine, to breast cancer 10 years ago when her grandchildren Selena, Feyana and Gwydion were aged two, three and five respectively.

Morgaine was just 38 at the time. However, Jean's other daughter, Jacqueline, also suffered with breast cancer and lost her battle aged 40.

Due to the huge responsibility of three young children, Jean had to give up her job and also lost her home.

However, she still finds the time to volunteer at the British Red Cross shop in the Rohais.

'Three or four years ago, the youngest granddaughter, Selena, was also diagnosed with a brain tumour,' Jayne said.

'How Jean copes, I just don't know.

'If anyone deserves a reward of some kind, Jean does.'

Jayne met Jean when she herself was suffering from breast cancer 10 years ago.

The nomination period for all 12 Pride of Guernsey Awards remains open until 30 June. Forms appear in paper or visit our dedicated sister website www.prideofguernsey.com/nominate
