They prompted Katina Jones to nominate States Works land management foreman Bob Carre and his team for the RefCo-sponsored Welcome Award.

Mrs Jones said the display at the Weighbridge roundabout was of the highest quality and it was one of the first impressions that people got of the island after arriving at the harbour.

'The whole island is a credit to this team, who cut and manage the land and keep it tidy for all to benefit, including the cliff paths where people love to walk,' said Mrs Jones.

'Candie Gardens is also a super garden for people to visit, with stunning displays all year round.

'They are on call 24/7 and last year, on the morning that St Peter Port was being judged for its Floral Guernsey entry, they were called out in the early hours after drunken yobs had vandalised the carpet bed at the North Plantation. By late morning, no one would have known it had happened as it was back to its full glory.'

All the work that the team did made Guernsey shine for everyone and Mrs Jones said visitors loved it.

The nomination period for all 12 Pride of Guernsey Awards remains open until 30 June. Forms appear in paper or visit our dedicated sister website www.prideofguernsey.com/nominate
