Pride of Guernsey: 'They have selfless love'

LOVING their granddaughter for who she is as a person has led to Bill and Nan Hooper being put forward for the Grandparent/s of the Year Award.

Abigail Hooper, 22 has severe learning disabilities and her mum Jenny nominated the couple, in their 80s, for The Channel Islands Co-operative Society-sponsored award on her behalf.

Bill and Nan continue to care for Abigail on a weekly basis.

'It has made no difference to granny and grandpa that because of my disabilities I have not been able to do with them the things that other grandparents enjoy with their grandchildren, they love me for who I am,' she said.

'I have no spoken language but granny and grandpa looked after me while mum went to work part-time.

'To this day they still get up very early one morning a week to come and look after me and they take me out each Sunday morning so mum and dad can go to church.'

Bill and Nan will be 81 in the summer and yet Abigail said they were still so young at heart, fun and had selfless love.

'My grandparents deserve an award for life, because it's not just for one year I would like to nominate them, for but for their selfless giving over 22 years as grandparents which continues to this day. I love them dearly.'
