Late flurry of Pride of Guernsey nominations

GUERNSEY PRESS reporters pulled out all the stops this week to help get all the Pride of Guernsey nominations completed in time for voting to start later this month.

Due to the huge number of entries, we will now be opening the voting a week later than planned, on Tuesday 26 July.

This is to ensure everyone is treated fairly and their stories appear in both the newspaper and online over the coming days before then.

A late flurry of entries, just before the closing date, left a mountain of nominations to be cleared by the news team and pictures to be taken.

Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis was delighted with the response to the inaugural awards, backed by our 12 Pride of Guernsey partners.

'Entries have totalled almost 250, which we are extremely delighted about, showing clearly as they do the newspaper's reach, relevance and enduring strong appeal to islanders,' he said.

'However, we could simply not have predicted the sheer numbers involved in this our first ever Pride of Guernsey year. It is a real success story.'

The public vote will establish the top three most popular entries in each award category.

These finalists for each of the 12 Pride of Guernsey categories – Teacher, Carer, Angel, Neighbour, Young Achiever, Emergency Hero, Arts Contribution, Overcoming Adversity, Parent/s, Grandparent/s, Parish Champion and Welcome of the Year – will then go forward to the awards ceremony, on 8 October, where the winners, chosen by our judges, will be revealed.

A special supplement reminding everyone about who has been nominated will be published on 26 July, the same day as voting opens.

Votes can be submitted on special forms that will be appearing in the paper, or can be cast online at prideofguernsey.com. The closing date is 16 August.
