Pride of Guernsey: 'Biggest and most successful festival'

IT IS probably one of our oldest – and best known – nominees for the Moonpig-sponsored Arts Contribution of the Year: Guernsey Eisteddfod.

'It is one of the biggest and most successful festivals that our island enjoys each year,' said Fiona Malley, who has nominated the festival.

'It incorporates music, drama, art, sewing, literature, photography, baking, jewellery making, roller skating, woodwork, Guernsey-French, French, indeed almost every type of art available to us.'

The Guernsey Eisteddfod has been an intrinsic part of the local art scene since 1922, when it was held at the Little Theatre and, with the exception of the Occupation years, locals and visitors have been entertained by the island's best artists, writers, craft makers and performers.

Thousands of entries are submitted every year and the festival allows those who have an interest in the arts to receive constructive comments and feedback from professional adjudicators that will help them develop their talents further.

'Without the Eisteddfod, many wouldn't have the opportunity to display their work, or at least would not have such a popular or as easily accessible forum in which to do so,' reckons Miss Malley.

'The work by people such as Pippa McCathie, Barbara Minta, Fran Bourget and their many other organisers and volunteers is enormous and these people and this event should be recognised for their unerring support and development of the arts in Guernsey.'
