Pride of Guernsey: 'they have been unfailingly helpful'
AS SOON as Margaret Macdonald moved into a quiet St Saviour's lane 25 years ago, she was greeted by Peter and Jayne Cataroche. That was just the start of a great friendship and she has now nominated the couple next door for the Neighbour of the Year award, sponsored by Swoffers.
Peter and Jayne have lived in the lane for 32 years. When they saw Margaret arrive in 1992, they popped round with their young daughter to make her feel welcome, bringing gifts of flowers and homemade cakes.
'Through all the years since they have been unfailingly helpful, looking after my house plants and garden when I am away, helping when I have problems with plumbing, water leaks or loose slates or any other maintenance issues,' said Margaret.
'They look after my car when I am away and take me to the airport and include me as one of the family in their celebrations. Often gifts of homemade cakes arrive and once, when I had 12 guests for a roast lunch, they came to the rescue and cooked the Yorkshire puddings in their oven when I could not get mine hot enough.'
She said they were just perfect neighbours.
Jayne said they were very fortunate to live in a lovely neighbourhood, where everyone helped each other out.
