Culture & Heritage operations manager Clive Martin said staff had done all they could to reduce costs and the project had come in well under budget.

The tower has suffered damp problems due to voids in the walls and previous repointing with cement.

Scaffolding was installed last year with the aim of filling intention to fill the voids with specialist grout and repointing the walls with lime mortar up to the first five metres of the walls.

In a bid to make best use of the scaffolding, the entire tower up to the balcony was repointed and the voids filled.
