Queen's Sapphire Jubilee bank holiday idea mooted
ISLANDERS could have some chance of an extra bank holiday this year.
The idea came as Romford MP Andrew Rosindell presented his bill to parliament for an extra day off to celebrate the Queen and her Sapphire Jubilee.
In his speech to the House of Commons, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Channel Islands Group said the 65th anniversary of the Queen's ascension to the throne was a remarkable milestone and was surely cause for great celebration.
States Assembly & Constitution Committee president deputy Matt Fallaize said, while Guernsey was not actively pursuing the holiday, they would most likely follow the UK's lead.
'Public holidays are set out in legislation and adding, removing or adjusting them requires the approval of the States of Deliberation,' he said.
'I am not preparing a case for a public holiday to celebrate the Queen's Sapphire Jubilee and I don't know if any other deputy or committee is doing so, but if the UK declared a public holiday I imagine Guernsey would be likely to do the same.'
On 6 February, the Queen became the first British monarch to reach 65 years on the throne.
