The sub-station was in the access road to the Rockmount Hotel car park, and the hotel was among those hit by the blackout.
Firefighters were called to the scene at about 8.45pm and initially tackled the blaze with dry powder. After this had little impact contact was made with Guernsey Electricity to ensure that the sub-station was isolated before firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used foam to put out the flames.
