A cold easterly wind from the continent will cause temperatures to drop to two or three degrees in the day and minus two in the evening.
The Met Office duty observer said it is difficult to predict how much snow will fall to the moment but warnings will be given out in due course.
'The last snow we had in 2013 we weren't really expecting it to be as heavy as it was so it's difficult to predict how much we will get,' he said.
Outlook warnings will be issued today but the Met Office said notices will also be given to all media outlets, the police and fire brigade.
